Introduction & Overview

NOGAPS-ALPHA was developed at NRL from 2000-2011 as a high-altitude prototype of the Navy’s global atmospheric forecast and data assimilation system. The success of this project led to cessation of further NOGAPS-ALPHA development and a frozen configuration at the end of 2011, as NRL moved to transition components of this prototype to a successor NAVGEM system that replaced NOGAPS in February 2013. However, this frozen NOGAPS-ALPHA system continues to be used as a scientific research tool.
